The VHDL Analysis and Standardization Group (VASG), has initiated activities which will lead
to the next couple of revisions of VHDL. A standard C
language interface to VHDL simulators has been defined and, with funding from Accellera, integration of the VHDL Programming Interface (VHPI) into the VHDL LRM is proceeding
towards the goal of balloting by end of this year.
VASG has also kicked-off the VHDL 200x language revision effort. This effort is initially separated into two efforts. The first, called fast-track, aims to incorporate
several high-value, low language impact enhancements. Some of these enhancements will benefit subordinate standards, such as std_logic_1164 which most designers depend on.

Concurrent with the fast-track, the VHDL 200x enhancement
effort includes additional efforts to enhance VHDL in the
following areas:
- Testbench and Verification
- Modeling and Productivity
- Tool performance
- Assertion-based Verification
- Data types and abstractions (including interface abstraction)
- Environment (interface VHDL tools to the external environment)
- Enhancements targeted to asynchronous modeling
If you are interested in monitoring and contributing to this
effort, Model Technology and the IEEE 1076 Working Group encourage your participation. You
can find more information here.
